About the project

Recently, social media has seen an influx of explicit content, as well as an increase in a younger audience as smart devices and the Internet become accessible. Children who encounter it unintentionally may experience confusion, distress, or harmful normalization. This publication aims to encourage understanding by visualizing what young minds may experience online, and encourages adults to take an active role in creating a safer digital environment.

Approach

The publication follows a young child's emotional journey online, from curiosity and exposure to isolation, using visual storytelling to mirror their internal experience. Early spreads rely on relatively empty spaces and simple design to mirror childhood innocence and curiosity, as not all exposure to this content is actively sought out online. As the narrative progresses, the publication becomes more distorted, with chaotic compositions, fragmented typography, and harsh digital color palettes to reflect sensory overload and confusion. The layouts become increasingly distorted and isolating, visually reinforcing the emotional impact of prolonged exposure and complete isolation. In the final section, the design shifts once more. Softer color palettes, calmer typography, and more structured layouts represent the moment when the child seeks guidance from a trusted adult. This visual resolution reinforces the project’s core message: protecting children online is a shared responsibility that requires communication, awareness, and care from both adults and young users.
